Which Veterinary Degrees Are Recognised by the RCVS in the UK?

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) is the regulatory body for veterinary professionals in the UK. To practise as a veterinarian in the UK, you must be registered with the RCVS. One of the key requirements for registration is holding a degree that is recognised by the RCVS. But which veterinary degrees are accepted, and what can you do if your qualification isn’t on the list?

Veterinary Degrees Recognised by the RCVS

The RCVS automatically recognises veterinary degrees from certain institutions. These include:

UK-Based Degrees

Veterinary degrees from the following UK universities are recognised automatically:

  • University of Bristol

  • University of Cambridge

  • University of Edinburgh

  • University of Glasgow

  • University of Liverpool

  • Royal Veterinary College (RVC), University of London

  • University of Nottingham

  • University of Surrey

  • Harper & Keele Veterinary School

Graduates from these institutions can register with the RCVS immediately upon completing their degree.

Overseas Degrees Recognised by the RCVS

Some veterinary degrees from outside the UK are also recognised automatically. These include degrees from:

  • Accredited veterinary schools in the European Union (for those who graduated before Brexit changes took effect)

  • Australia and New Zealand (through the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council accreditation)

  • South Africa (University of Pretoria)

  • North America (through accreditation by the American Veterinary Medical Association - AVMA)

What If Your Veterinary Degree Is Not Recognised by the RCVS?

If your veterinary degree is not automatically recognised by the RCVS, you will need to take additional steps to practise in the UK. Here’s what you can do:

1. Pass the RCVS Statutory Examination

The RCVS offers a Statutory Examination for veterinary surgeons with degrees that are not automatically recognised. This process involves:

  • Initial Assessment:You must submit your degree and transcripts to the RCVS for evaluation.

  • English Language Proficiency:If English is not your first language, you will need to provide proof of English proficiency (e.g., IELTS or OET).

  • Written Examination:A two-part exam covering veterinary sciences, clinical skills, and professional knowledge.

  • OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination):A practical examination testing your ability to handle real-world veterinary cases.

Passing these assessments allows you to register with the RCVS and practise as a veterinarian in the UK.

2. Apply for the RCVS Temporary Registration

Some veterinarians may be eligible for temporary registration, particularly if they have specialist skills or experience that are in high demand. This allows them to work under supervision in specific roles, often in academia or research settings.

3. Gain Further Qualifications

Some international vets opt to complete a recognised postgraduate qualification in the UK. This can sometimes facilitate an easier route to RCVS registration, particularly for those working in academia or research.
