World Mental Health Day

October 10th marks World Mental Health Day which is a powerful reminder of the importance of mental well-being for people in every profession, but especially for those within highly stressful environments such as the Veterinary Industry.

Whether you are a Veterinarian or Veterinary Nurse, balancing your lifestyle and prioritising your mental health can be challenging, but it is crucial for your overall happiness and career success.

At Lloyd & Cowan, we understand the unique pressures that come from the Veterinary industry, with a lot of our previous candidates expressing their concerns and pressures - The long hours, emotional cases, and physical demands.

If you have been feeling overwhelmed, stressed or emotionally drained, you are not alone. But do you know when enough is enough, and when it is time to take action? Do you feel your mental health is suffering at work? You don't have the same positive mindset you used to? Maybe it is time you think and ask yourself, are happy in your current role? Is a change needed? Take the time today to ask yourself these questions.

Well, that is where we hope we can provide some advice today and hopefully help someone who is silently suffering - Lloyd & Cowan is here to support you in finding a healthier and balanced work environment with our range of Veterinary opportunities worldwide, there is a role waiting for you that ticks every check box.

Step 1: Problem Recognition

There are many signs which indicate your mental health is suffering at work, here are some of the common indicators:

  1. Chronic Stress - Do you feel stressed even when you are not at work? Prolonged stress can lead to burn out.

  2. Emotional Exhaustion - We understand feeling emotionally drained after dealing with patients or clients is normal, but if this becomes constant, it can cause concern.

  3. Lack of motivation - If you feel you have lost your passion, your drive, and beginning to dread heading into work, this could be a major red flag.

  4. Irritability or Mood Swings - Have you noticed yourself becoming more irritable, frustrated, or emotional? Mood changes and swings are a huge indicator your mental health is suffering.

Did any of those issues resonate with you? If so, it is time to take the next step.

Step 2: Address The Issue

It is important to address the situation before it worsens - here is somethings you can do:

  1. Talk to someone - We know this can be obvious and easy to recommend, but opening up to others can be the most help, you don't need to go through this alone, speaking up can provide much needed relief. Whether it is a colleague, a friend, or a professional, discussing how you feel is a crucial step.

  2. Reassess your career path - Sometimes, the demands of your current role may no longer be a good fit for you, if you have been considering change this could be the time to explore and take the next step towards opportunities which better align with your priorities.

  3. Evaluate your environment - Consider whether the issues you are currently dealing with are temportary, or more deeply rooted. If you feel unsupported or overwhelmed, it may be time to look for a healthier environment, and that is where we can help!

Take the time to evaluate your current environment, if you feel it doesn't fufill your needs anymore, you can't vision a future where you will be happy and thriving, it is time for a fresh start.
